The Dangers of Driving Under the Influence: How Does Marijuana Affect Your Ability to Drive?

December 3, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

In 2018, Michigan became the 10th state to legalize recreational marijuana, and while it is still illegal on the federal level, marijuana legalization is sweeping the US, according to the site Business Insider. Most people believe that driving under the influence of marijuana doesn’t impair your ability to drive and therefore isn’t that dangerous. Not only has marijuana proven to reduce your judgment significantly, but it also impairs your motor coordination and reaction time.

Does Marijuana Impair Your Ability to Drive?
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, marijuana is the illicit drug that is most frequently found in the blood of those drivers that have been involved in vehicle crashes. This is because marijuana affects the cognitive abilities that are needed when you drive. Marijuana can impair your ability to concentrate and cause poor judgment and result in slow information processing and confusion. This is why it is safer to not get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle until after you are sober.

However, pot isn’t as dangerous as driving under the influence of other drugs or alcohol. Recent studies have shown that those who use pot are more likely to weave within their own lane, but are less likely to speed or swerve into other lanes.

Risks of Driving Under the Influence of Cannibis
Using marijuana and getting behind the wheel increases your chances of crashing compared to other drivers who aren’t under the influence of any substances. This also increases the chances that you will hurt yourself and others when you choose to drive under the influence. It is even more likely that you will get pulled over and arrested if you decide to operate under the influence of marijuana. If you get arrested, you’ll end up having to pay a high fine and could even have your license suspended. Driving under the influence of marijuana could land you in jail and saddle you with a criminal record, which in turn could make it difficult for you to find a job in the future. It is important to keep yourself safe.

Signs of Pot Use
One of the common signs of marijuana use is the unmistakable red or bloodshot eyes. It has also been shown in numerous studies that marijuana use causes reaction times to be delayed and poor coordination. You may also find that you feel anxious, tired, or dizzy when you use marijuana. These are all behaviors that police officers look at when they are trying to determine if someone is under the influence of marijuana.

What Should I Do if I’m Impaired
If you find yourself impaired, do not get behind the wheel. If the person you’re with is impaired, refuse to get in the car with them. You’ll want to wait approximately four hours after smoking, before getting behind the wheel to allow a chance for your high to wear off. Being under the influence of marijuana means that your ability to appropriately react in a situation while driving may be affected significantly. A split-second decision could ultimately be the difference between life and death.

Hi Friends!
I'm Fern and I have a love for travel, beauty, health and flowers! I went to school for nutrition, but wasn't really interested in being a nutritionist. So, I started to bartend and have since I graduated school a year ago.
I love talking to people, traveling and writing on my blog... and bartending allows me to do the things I love.

I can take off for a month to travel abroad and there will never be any shortage of bartending/serving jobs when I get home. I also love that I can work abroad bartending anywhere I want! So, I hope you enjoy my blog and if you have any questions, feel free to email me! :)
