Music is a universal language that brings people together. While most people enjoy listening to music, there are some who wish to take the experience to the next level and start learning how to play instruments and create their own songs. There are many music genres out there that appeal to different types of people, some genres like country music, are slightly less mainstream than others. Nevertheless, country music is enjoyed by millions of people around the country.

With the help of Hollywood, some sub-genres of country music like ‘bluegrass’ came into the limelight. Since then, the spotlight has been on a unique instrument with a distinct sound, the banjo. If it is your first time listening to a banjo, you’ll probably think it is difficult to learn. Here are our tips on how you can start playing the banjo.

  1. Listen to banjo music

The first step to learning how to play the banjo is listening to it being played. There are many local radio stations playing country music which will increase your exposure to the genre. The more you become familiar with the sound, the easier it is to proceed to the next step, which is learning how to play.

  1. Choose your method for learning

Learning to play the banjo is possible through several means. If you want to play with the help of an instructor, you can always enrol in a music school. If you’re going to play on your own time, you can download videos on how to play dueling banjos for beginners. Regardless of your skill level, there is always an option available for you.

  1. Seek inspiration

If you don’t know many artists who play the banjo well, you can start by listening to recent recordings from artists like the Kruger Brothers. If you favor a sweeter or gentle approach to playing the banjo, you can also check out music from Steve Martin and Mark Johnson. The internet is a treasure trove of information if you want to browse some of the best music you can listen to which heavily uses the sound of a banjo.

  1. Meet with other banjo players

There are music festivals around the country which are excellent opportunities for meeting people who share your interests. Aside from music festivals, you can also join music clubs to mingle and learn directly from banjo players. Being part of a community of people who appreciate banjo music and play the instrument well will help hasten your learning and improve your skills.

  1. Overcome your fear and have fun!

Most importantly, playing the banjo is about embracing your passion for music and having fun as you learn. You need to overcome your fears and never be afraid to make mistakes while honing your craft. Beginners always encounter struggles with learning. If you give up, you won’t reach your goal of playing the banjo proficiently. Taking up a hobby like playing the banjo does not only serve as a form of recreation but is also an excellent mode of teaching you discipline and perseverance.

Hi Friends!
I'm Fern and I have a love for travel, beauty, health and flowers! I went to school for nutrition, but wasn't really interested in being a nutritionist. So, I started to bartend and have since I graduated school a year ago.
I love talking to people, traveling and writing on my blog... and bartending allows me to do the things I love.

I can take off for a month to travel abroad and there will never be any shortage of bartending/serving jobs when I get home. I also love that I can work abroad bartending anywhere I want! So, I hope you enjoy my blog and if you have any questions, feel free to email me! :)
